Utica College, located in the heart of Central New York, seeks nominations and applications for the position of Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. Utica College seeks an innovative and exceptional leader with a strong record of academic accomplishment to serve in this key leadership position and help lead the senior management team under President Laura Casamento. The new Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs will have the opportunity to develop and advance a vision of progressive education, student success, and improved graduation and retention rates, in collaboration with a dynamic faculty and staff and a supportive administration.

HISTORY


Founded in service to the families of the Mohawk Valley and their World War II veterans, Utica College has never veered from its original purpose. Since the first faculty member stood before the first student in the first class on Oneida Square, generations of Utica College faculty, staff and administrators have distinguished themselves by the depth of their commitment to engaging students where they find them; stimulating their imaginations and hearts, and challenging their determination of what’s possible.

Originally established by Syracuse University in partnership with Utica-area business and civic leaders, Utica College applied for and received its own accreditation in 1978. A 1995 agreement afforded Utica governance and autonomy as an independently chartered institution; however, Utica and Syracuse maintained an academic relationship, whereby Utica undergraduates continued to earn the Syracuse baccalaureate degree. Since 1998, the College has offered graduate degree programs, including master’s and doctoral options in a broad range of fields. Utica College conferred its own first graduate degree in 2000.

Today’s Utica College is a leader among educational institutions: a progressive, creative and adaptive enterprise fully committed to the exploration of pedagogical and structural innovation. The College graduates fundamentally well-educated men and women, able to guide the course of their own lives and shape the contributions they will make to the world in which they live.

In the fall of 2008, the College announced that it would transition to full independence from Syracuse University, with the entering freshman and transfer students of fall 2010 becoming the first class of a truly independent Utica College.

UTICA COLLEGE TODAY



Since 2000, Utica College has grown remarkably, driven by the desire to meet the needs of society and its students. A commitment to entrepreneurial and strategic change has resulted in an increase of 77 percent in freshman enrollment and a 250 percent increase in total enrollment. While maintaining its commitment to its traditional programs, the College also has introduced more than 40 new academic programs, including programs in Cybersecurity, which have earned the College national and international recognition. The addition of online and blended programs, investment in the physical plant, expanded athletic offerings (from 11 to 26 programs) and the completion of a comprehensive campaign that exceeded its goal by $9 million have garnered additional recognition. In 2014, the College opened its first out-of-state campus in St. Petersburg, Florida, home to the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program (ABSN).

The College has dedicated a number of new buildings, including two state-of-the-art academic buildings serving the Health Professions, Cybersecurity, and Criminal Justice, a new welcome center for visitors and prospective students, and the 135,000 square-foot Todd and Jen Hutton Sports and Recreation Center. Moreover, it has opened the Robert Brvenik Center for Business Education in Utica’s downtown financial district.

Utica College currently enrolls approximately 5,270 full- and part-time students on campus and online, including 3,707 undergraduate and 1,563 graduate students. Approximately 2,868 of those students are on campus, 2,066 are online students, and 336 are hybrid students in the ABSN program.

STRATEGIC PLAN



At the conclusion of the 2018 Middle States visit, the College will begin its next strategic planning process. It is expected that this new Strategic Plan will prioritize, among other things, student success, retention, and graduation. The next Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs will be expected to play a leadership role in the discussions and process towards the new strategic plan.

A BOLD MOVE FOR TOMORROW



To address the national concern of college affordability, Utica College successfully reset its tuition in 2016 following an intensive 18-month study. To continue to remain accessible to middle class and disadvantaged students, tuition was reset from $34,466 to $19,996 for 2016-17, and in 2017-18 saw a modest increase to $20,126. More than 90 percent of Utica College students receive financial aid assistance through scholarships, grants, loans, and other forms of financial aid. Aid packages typically offset more than half of the cost of tuition. Enrollment, retention, and the academic quality of the student body have all increased as a result of the tuition reset.

GOVERNANCE



The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the College. Its members include alumni, friends of the College, and community leaders. Officers include a chairperson, three vice chairpersons, and a secretary. There are 32 additional members of the Board along with President Casamento, who serves as an ex-officio member of the Board.

ABOUT THE PRESIDENT



Laura Casamento became the ninth president and fourteenth chief executive officer of Utica College on August 2, 2016. She is the second president selected by the independent Board of Trustees, and the first woman to serve as president in the 70-year history of the College. Laura earned an Ed.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and an M.B.A. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Prior to assuming the presidency, Laura served as Executive Vice President and Chief Advancement Officer for Utica College, arriving in 2004. She was a principal architect of Utica College’s tuition reset, which has garnered national attention. As a first-generation college graduate, she is passionate about accessibility and affordability. She was instrumental in the success of the Achieve: A New Dream, A New Era comprehensive campaign, which raised $34 million, $9 million beyond its goal.

PRESIDENT’S CABINET



The President’s Cabinet includes senior college administrators who serve as a resource to the president and to the Board of Trustees committees. The Academic Cabinet includes the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences; Dean of the School of Business and Justice Studies; Dean of the School of Health Professions and Education; Senior Associate Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies; Associate Provost for Online Learning and Vice President for Online and Extended Studies; Senior Vice President for Student Life and Enrollment Management; Dean of Academic Assessment; and the Director of the Library and Learning Commons. The Assistant Vice President for Information Technology and Institutional Research also meets regularly with the Cabinet.

STUDENT LIFE



Utica students thrive in a community that is ethnically, socio-economically, and culturally diverse. The College serves a diverse student population: residential, commuter, adult, and online, with students representing 48 states and 39 countries.

The diversity of experiences available to students expands their possibilities. Along with career preparation, students have a firm grounding in a broad arts and sciences curriculum through general education courses and liberal arts electives. They learn by doing, as they engage in internships, pure and applied research, leadership and service activities, and off-campus study, including a number of overseas programs in such countries as the Dominican Republic, Albania, Bulgaria, and Romania. They learn in a community with students from all across the nation with differing backgrounds. Such experiences not only foster students’ cultural sensitivity, but also widen their viewpoints and their future prospects. The College also maintains standing faculty and student exchange relationships with Aberystwyth University in Wales, Åbo Akademi in Turku, Finland, and the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland.

Students are involved in more than 100 campus organizations. The Utica College Pioneers compete in 26 NCAA Division III sports as a member of the Empire 8 Conference and the Eastern College Athletic Conference. Approximately 25 percent of undergraduate on-campus students participate in intercollegiate athletics. A wide selection of intramural and club sports provides additional recreational opportunities.

More than three-quarters of first-year undergraduate students reside on campus. Themed Housing units provide an exciting and unique experience for students to become even more involved with the campus community by living with students who share the same interests and with a faculty/staff mentor who shares those same interests and works with the residential floor.

LOCATION



The City of Utica is the county seat of Oneida County and an economic and cultural hub of the beautiful Mohawk Valley. Located approximately 45 miles east of Syracuse and 90 miles northwest of Albany, Utica is undergoing a revitalization and reinvention focused on nanotechnology, healthcare, higher education, and industrial services.

A diverse and inclusive community – known as the “Second Chance City” and home to one of the largest refugee populations in the United States – Utica offers a vibrant cultural scene supported by first-rate facilities such as the historic Stanley Theatre and Munson-Williams-Proctor Museum of Art.

Outdoor and athletic opportunities include the Boilermaker Road Race (one of the largest 15K races in the country) and close proximity to both the mountains and lakes of the Adirondacks as well as the Thousand Islands of the Saint Lawrence River. In addition, the Utica College Pioneers and the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League regularly sell out the Utica Memorial Auditorium, providing both a source of pride and economic benefit to the city.

With the continued redevelopment and revitalization of the city, a number of restaurants and other establishments have opened in the downtown area, including some that have received state and national recognition.

Utica College is an important resource for the greater Utica-Rome metropolitan area and the Mohawk Valley. It not only provides myriad educational, cultural, and athletic opportunities, but plays a vital role in the economic growth of the entire region. Students participate in internships, clinical placements, and practicums in hundreds of agencies, businesses, and facilities throughout the region. Utica College’s commitment to the community and to the revitalization of the City of Utica is perhaps best illustrated by the decision to relocate the business programs in the heart of downtown. Busloads of students and faculty members commute daily to the Robert Brvenik Center for Business Education, a state-of-the-art educational facility located in a beautifully restored early twentieth-century building, the Clark City Center.

ACADEMICS



The foundation of the Utica College academic experience is integration of the liberal arts, professional study, and co-curricular experiences. Utica College students gain a broad base of knowledge and skills through the liberal arts and sciences that complements programs with a career focus, developing skills that prepare them for lifelong learning and career development. Co-curricular student experiences are especially important to their development and are another aspect of Utica College’s Academic Promise. At Utica, a broad liberal-arts core of classwork is combined with learning that is gained outside the classroom, where students have opportunities to engage with the community and with colleagues and peers.

The College provides a level of personal attention unimaginable at larger institutions. Whether held on campus or online, classes are small and interactive – with a typical class size of 18 students and an average 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio. This level of personal attention could not exist without a dedicated and talented faculty. As of the fall of 2017, the faculty includes 145 full-time members, most holding doctorates or the highest degree in their field. The 324 part-time and adjunct faculty members are dedicated to excellence in teaching, both on campus and online, and to sharing their industry and professional experience.

In addition to the main campus in Utica, there are academic sites in Syracuse, NY and in St. Petersburg, Florida that are currently devoted to an accelerated bachelor of science in nursing program.

The College’s academic structure includes the schools of Arts and Sciences, Business and Justice Studies, Health Professions and Education, and Online and Extended Studies. Utica College is always moving forward with innovative programs and pedagogies that expand access and improve quality. In Fall 2015 for example, the College introduced nine new academic programs, including an MPS in Cyber Policy and Risk Analysis and undergraduate programs in Wellness and Adventure Education, Animal Behavior, Neuroscience, and Psychobiology. In 2016 and 2017 the College introduced undergraduate programs in Communication and Media, Criminal Intelligence Analysis, French, Nutrition, Spanish, and Sports Management, and a graduate program in Data Science. In addition, the College has added a number of certificate programs for both undergraduate and graduate students. Members of the faculty are continually exploring new ideas, carving new academic pathways, and preparing students to meet the challenges of the modern workforce. Utica College offers 45 undergraduate majors, 31 minors, and 20 graduate programs, including master’s degrees, doctoral programs, and graduate-level certificates, on-campus and online. There are also numerous pre-professional and special programs.

Accreditations



Utica College is fully accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The College is currently engaged in the self-study process for Middle States leading to the submission of a self-study document in December 2017 or January 2018 and a Middle States Visiting Team on-site review in April 2018. In addition, a number of programs have been accredited or given recognition by discipline-specific accrediting agencies, including Chemistry, Construction Management, Education, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy. The business programs are in candidacy status for discipline-specific accreditation, and the programs in Health Care Administration and Nutrition will be applying for accreditation for their respective accrediting organizations shortly.

School of Arts and Sciences



The School of Arts and Sciences offers a broad range of majors in two divisions: Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and Humanities and Social Sciences. In Natural Sciences and Mathematics, programs are offered in Animal Behavior, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geoscience, Mathematics, Neuroscience, Nutrition, Physics, Psychobiology, and Psychology. A program in Environmental Sciences is in development. In Humanities and Social Sciences, programs include Communication and Media, Data Science (M.S.), English, Foreign Language, French, Government and Politics, History, International Studies, Liberal Studies (B.S. and M.S.), Philosophy, Sociology and Anthropology, and Spanish. A Master of Public Administration program is in development.

The faculty of the School of Arts and Sciences includes some of the most accomplished teachers and scholars at Utica College. Eighteen of the faculty members are recipients of the prestigious Virgil Crisafulli Distinguished Teaching Award, the highest teaching honor at Utica College. Twelve members of the School have been awarded the Harold T. Clark, Jr. Award for professional accomplishment. Members of the faculty have received numerous competitive grants and Fulbright Fellowships.

Many of the Arts and Sciences faculty are active in research with undergraduate students. Some of these students have received external grants and fellowships to support their research, and have published their work in journals and presented their findings at regional and national scientific conferences. The educational program in Arts and Sciences is further enhanced by the active work of the Institute for Applied Ethics, the Eugene Paul Nassar Center for Ethnic Studies, the Center for Historical Research, the Human Rights Advocacy Program, and the Small Cities and Rural Studies Center. A proposal for a Center for Public Affairs and Election Research is currently before the Board of Trustees.

School of Business and Justice Studies



The School of Business and Justice Studies includes the departments of Business and Economics, Construction Management, Economic Crime, Justice Studies, Cybersecurity, and Public Relations and Journalism. The School is further enriched by an array of institutes and centers, including the Center for Identity Management and Information Protection, the Northeast Cyber Forensics Center (NCFC), the Economic Crime and Cybersecurity Institute, the New York Reporting Project, and the Raymond Simon Institute for Public Relations.

Degrees are offered in a wide array of disciplines at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Majors include Accounting, Business Economics, Criminal Intelligence Analysis, Criminal Justice, Cybersecurity and Information Assurance, Economics, Fraud and Financial Crime Investigation, Health Studies Management; Management, Public Relations, and Sports Management. Master’s degrees are offered in Cybersecurity, Cyber Policy and Risk Analysis, Economic Crime and Fraud Management, Financial Crime and Compliance Management, General Management, and Professional Accountancy.

The School is actively planning new graduate programs in Cybersecurity (a doctorate of professional studies), and an MS in Professional Accountancy to complement the Accounting MBA.

Faculty within the School of Business and Social Justice possess a wide array of knowledge and real-world experiences. The members of this highly credentialed faculty are renowned throughout their respective industries, and many are active in their respective fields of inquiry. From the ever-changing world of technology to risk management and insurance, students are given the current tools and practices needed to prepare for internship opportunities and to be successful in their careers.


School of Health Professions and Education



Degree offerings in Health Professions and Education include undergraduate programs in Health Studies, Nursing (three different undergraduate formats), Psychology – Child Life, Therapeutic Recreation, and Wellness and Adventure Education; master’s programs in Health Care Administration and Occupational Therapy; and two Doctor of Physical Therapy programs (pre-licensure and transitional post-licensure). Teacher Education programs are offered at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, with a large number of certification areas. New programs in development include an M.S. in Nursing, with tracks in Nursing Administration, Nursing Education, and Family Nurse Practitioner, and both a Doctor of Occupational Therapy and a Transitional Doctor of Occupational Therapy.

Curricula are delivered by an award-winning faculty, including three recipients of the Virgil Crisafulli Distinguished Teaching Award, as well as faculty members who have been recognized within their professions. A Center for Ergonomic Analysis and Research has been proposed and awaits approval by the Board of Trustees.

The faculty includes many who are highly active in their fields and have been successful in securing grants, with a particular focus on assisting underrepresented students and those with disabilities. Students are engaged in interdisciplinary experiences and are actively engaged within the community. Students work with community groups, for example by providing mental health services to elders, assisting immigrant elders to use the healthcare system and to prepare for naturalization, coordinating a breakfast reading club at an elementary school, and conducting handwriting workshops for children and adults.

School of Online and Extended Studies



Utica College offers online bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees and certificates in Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Economic Crime and Fraud, Healthcare, Nursing, and Physical Therapy. Online programs are mainly asynchronous, offering quality programs when and where it is convenient for students. Faculty members are highly credentialed and offer students the support they need to be successful in an online format. See our program listing for details.

The School of Online and Extended Studies assists and oversees new online program development and provides instructional design support, academic oversight, and faculty support and training for all online/hybrid programs. This area is also responsible for managing the College’s academic partners and the services they provide.

Frank E. Gannett Memorial Library and Learning Commons



The Utica College Library's general collection supports the academic curriculum. This collection contains: 172,000 books, 112 online databases, 800 print journals, 5,000 electronic journals, and 600 electronic books. The library is housed in a 67,000-square foot, three-story building that has stack capacity of 190,000 volumes. It was named in honor of benefactor Frank E. Gannett, founder of the Gannett media corporation. Student and research accommodations include individual carrels, table seating, group study rooms, lounge/reading areas, and over 75 computer workstations.

Artwork is on display throughout the library, including many objects from the Edith Langley Barrett Art Gallery located on the lower floor.

Academic Assessment



Utica College is committed to assessing the quality of its programs. A Dean of Academic Assessment reports to the Provost and is assisted by the Academic Assessment Coordinating Committee and other bodies to coordinate all academic assessment at Utica College. Assessment measures include a five-year program review, departmental annual reviews, and assessment of student learning. Assessment activity within the Division of Academic Affairs is guided by the general principles contained in the document Assessing Institutional Effectiveness at Utica College (August 2014). Diversity and Inclusion

Utica College is a dynamic institution with high-quality academic programs, a caring community culture, highly dedicated faculty and staff, and a tradition of innovation. The opportunities and challenges below particularly relate to the role of Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs (Provost and SVPAA).

  • Communication. The College’s close-knit community and its willingness to be innovative as the College has evolved have always been strengths. In addressing new issues as well as old, it is important for the Provost and SVPAA to be an excellent communicator and listener and continue to play an active, engaged, and transparent role with the students, staff, faculty, alumni, and the local community.
     
  • Foster Mutual Appreciation. The College’s extraordinarily dedicated faculty and staff are the heart of the institution and the energy behind its success. As the College continues to grow and develop, it will be important for the Provost and SVPAA to foster a culture of mutual appreciation, shared governance, transparency, accountability, and trust.
     
  • Managing External Challenges. In light of the changing landscape in higher education, including heightened government accountability standards and the introduction and possible expansion of Excelsior Scholarships in New York State, the College will need to continue innovative and visionary approaches to program development, enrollment, and student success. The Provost and SVPAA will be asked to take a leadership role in bringing forth the best minds of the College to provide creative new solutions.
     
  • Actionable Planning. As the College embarks on a strategic planning process in 2018, the Provost and SVPAA will be tasked with engaging the campus community in the development of an accompanying academic master plan. Capitalizing on past successes, the plan will develop strategies to keep Utica College on the forefront of innovative and entrepreneurial programming tied to the academic mission.
     
  • Strengthening Diversity and Inclusion. The College has a well-deserved historic reputation for building diverse student populations, including significant numbers of students of color, and student diversification in terms of gender and age. Recent efforts to achieve greater diversity and inclusion among faculty, staff, and the student body call for energy, commitment, and ideas.
     
  • Program Development. For continued success and to meet the needs of students, Utica College has created an array of attractive and academically strong programs that are market-responsive and in high demand. The College is committed to effective assessment to ensure continuous improvement in its services, programs, and curricular offerings. To remain competitive, the Provost and SVPAA will provide academic leadership in the further development of degree offerings both on campus and online, integrating liberal and professional studies.
     
  • Improving Student Success. Utica’s mission and values call for a strong dedication to a diverse population of students, including first-generation college students and students from underrepresented backgrounds. Along with personal attention, the College offers a strong student success program that includes new student programs and academic coaches and navigators. Academic leadership must be dedicated to achieving equitable student outcomes and ensuring a rigorous educational experience that prepares all students for rewarding careers, responsible citizenship, enlightened leadership, and fulfilling lives. Given the national discourse regarding student learning and persistence as well as the national debate regarding the value of higher education, Utica College has an opportunity to set the standard for the future.
     
  • Commitment to Faculty Development. The College’s dedicated faculty is one its central strengths. In order to ensure the long-term strength of the faculty, the Provost and SVPAA will be expected to work towards developing an effective and sustainable means of enabling the faculty to pursue innovative methods that enhance student learning and advance scholarly research and creative achievement. Identifying research opportunities and creating effective approaches to further develop the faculty, both as a community and individually is a priority.
     
  • Optimizing Enrollment and Retention. As a tuition-dependent institution, Utica College’s financial future depends on effective and strategic enrollment management. The College must conduct effective marketing, achieve strong admissions, and increase rates of retention. The Provost and SVPAA will play a major role in retention strategies as well as enrollment initiatives.
     
  • Profile Enhancement. Utica College operates in a highly competitive marketplace. The College is distinguished by its unique mission, commitment to affordable education, and its engagement with (and support for) students. The Provost and SVPAA will apply academic strengths that enhance Utica’s image and identity within the region and the state of New York, the Northeast, and beyond.
     
  • Student Success after Graduation. Utica College prides itself on the success of its students after graduation and offers aggressive and robust career services support, highly sought-after programs, and strong continuing education offerings. The next Provost and SVPAA will be expected to support these efforts.

POSITION AND QUALIFICATIONS


The Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs will administer an operating budget of $3.5 million and provide leadership to staff in Academic Affairs, as well as to 145 full-time and 324 part-time faculty who have built a tradition of excellence in teaching and learning with particular emphasis on providing individual attention to students through a strong commitment to small classes and high impact practices.

Reporting to the President, the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer, responsible for the faculty as well as related administrative departments that support the College’s academic program. In consultation with the faculty, the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs articulates and directs the academic vision of the College. He or she will provide leadership to support and enhance the College’s commitment to academic excellence, scholarly values, and a strong liberal education integrated with professional study in order to inspire and educate each student.

The Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs is responsible for maintaining the quality of the academic environment through the development and assessment of curriculum and the facilitation of teaching and research in an increasingly diverse community of faculty, students, and staff. The Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs advises the President on college-wide planning, policy and operations, and acts on the President’s behalf in her absence or as designated.

The Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs also oversees the Office for Diversity and Inclusion and will lead the charge for a variety of initiatives, including a comprehensively redesigned approach to hiring an increasingly diverse workforce - one that mirrors the richness in diversity of the Utica area and Utica College’s student body.

To be considered, candidates must have an earned terminal degree and have been awarded tenure with a distinguished record of accomplishment in teaching, active scholarship, service, program funding, and collaborative governance.

The successful candidate must:

  • demonstrate a commitment to the life of the mind;
  • have substantial higher education experience;
  • hold a distinguished record of progressively advanced administrative experience;
  • possess a demonstrated responsibility for a broad range of organizational areas including:
    • planning and assessment;
    • institutional effectiveness measures;
    • strategic planning;
    • faculty development;
    • operational and capital budgeting;
    • personnel processes and procedures; and
    • information technology applications and trends;
  • have outstanding listening, writing, and communication skills;
  • possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups; and
  • have demonstrated experience in managing diversified revenue streams, including traditional, online, and accelerated academic program delivery models.
Additional preferred experiences include:

  • a track record in recruiting, evaluating, and promoting faculty;
  • the ability to work effectively with all members of the College community – to listen, to engage, to persuade, and to foster individual and community-wide development;
  • the ability to serve as an advocate for the College to internal and external constituencies, including involvement in friend- and fund-raising activities and relationship-building;
  • an appreciation and demonstrated advocacy for both liberal arts and professional programs;
  • the capacity to work effectively with the Board of Trustees;
  • experience with or understanding of shared governance in the context of a collective bargaining environment;
  • strong negotiation and political skills; and
  • honesty, integrity, common sense, good judgment, energy, and a sense of humor.
